This was a proposed six months (February to August 2023) Project by Purple Innovation for Women and Girls. The Project sought to provide extensive training in investigative journalism and evidence-based budget tracking to qualified journalists in Nkhata Bay and Mzimba to unearth corruption, mismanagement allegations and accountability issues surrounding COVID 19 funds disbursed to Malawi Government since the onset of the pandemic. With funding from African Alliance amounting to R280, 000.
The Project trained 10 investigative journalists in Mzimba and Nkhata Bay to monitor mismanagement of COVID funds at local Government and National levels. These journalists produced evidence-based nine investigative stories on public procurement in COVID 19 materials in Malawi to inform legal investigations and prosecutions of allegedly corrupt public officers in the country. On the same note, Purple Innovation implemented the same project for two months under National Democratic Institution (NDI). 20 Journalists submitted stories surrounding Covid-19 funds mismanagement by Mzuzu City Council to inform legal investigations of corrupt officers.
