COVID19 TRANSPARENCY REPORTING PROJECT STARTS ON A HIGH NOTE

From February 2023 Purple Innovation has been implementing Strengthening COVID 19
Funds Accountability Project with funding of ZAR 280 000 from the African Alliance. The
Project provided extensive training in investigative journalism and evidence-based budget
tracking to qualified journalists in Nkhata Bay and Mzimba to unearth corruption,
mismanagement allegations and accountability issues surrounding COVID 19 funds
disbursed to Malawi Government since the onset of the pandemic.
These trained investigative journalists have produced evidence-based investigative stories on
public procurement in COVID 19 materials in Malawi. This have raised awareness of the
malpractice and the findings have been petitioned to the Anti-Corruption Bureau

With funding from National Democratic Institution amounting to MWK 1500 000 Purple
Innovation also implemented COVID Transparency Reporting Project. The Project aimed at
enhancing transparency on corruption related to the utilization of COVID-19 funds by Mzuzu
City Council through investigative journalism between February 2023 – March 2023.
The project has contributed to promotion transparency in public contracting and funds
utilization regarding COVID-19 public procurement at Mzuzu City Council
